Kings at Oilers: We All Saw This Coming
Well. That went about as well as any of us expected. As much we might have hoped that the Kings wouldn’t break the Oilers’ losing streak and give them their 2nd win in 22 games, we should have known better.
The Oilers potted 2 goals going into the 3rd, so the Kings were desperate to get a goal and get some momentum going. The Kings ended up outshooting the Oilers 15 to 1, and it was only juuuuust enough to tie the game. The Kings first goal was one that no one knew they scored. It was only through the divine intervention of the Toronto Situation Room that we found out that Doughty’s shot from minutes prior actually went it and then off the camera back out of the net.
The confused murmurings running throughout Rexall Place was mirrored by everyone else who forgot that with the new rules, goals could be awarded later. But eh, we’ll take it.
Jake Muzzin scores a “real” goal in the last few minutes of the period with the Kings having a man advantage. If you think that the Kings miraculously tying things up means that it turns out well for them like it did for Calgary, you are very much mistaken.
Both teams are held at bay during overtime, and the game goes to a shootout. The game is full of hijinks though, and part way through the shoot out, there was a brief interlude where a linesman had to retape Ben Scrivens’ knob (this sounds weirdly suggestive) because it was orange instead of rule-abiding white.
This game literally makes no sense. David Perron beats Quick to win it for the Oilers, and us Kings fans heave a giant resigned sigh. We end the year on a disappointing note, so let’s hope that the new year brings us nicer things.
