The Kings host the Islanders tonight at the Staples Center, so I think we all know what tune will open up this little mix.

Weezer – Island in the Sun

The Islanders are sitting pretty at the bottom of a lackluster Metropolitan Division. At this point, I’ve just stopped pretending that the Sabres are a hockey team, so while the Islanders are 29th in the league, c’mon, they’re just last.

Screen Shot 2013-12-07 at 4.04.37 PMLooking at the Sabres’ stats makes me sad for them.

They come into this game having just lost 8 straight. In fact, the last time they won was on November 16 in a shootout win against the Detroit Red Wings. The last time the Kings won in a shootout? Tuesday.  Even though it’s not the best statistic, Visnovsky, Vanek and Eric Boulton are the only 3 players on the plus side for the team.

Linda Rondstadt – You’re No Good

I wanted to link the Michael Bolton version of this for the Bolton/Boulton comparison, but I guess it doesn’t exist on the internet. You’re welcome everyone, I suppose.

Despite the overall terribleness of them team, a couple of guys are skating their asses off so that they don’t fall to Sabres status. John Tavares has more points than the bottom 11 scorers on his team combined. The Islanders’ 3 top points producers (Tavares, Okposo and Nielsen) account for 41% of points on the team. 44% of goals and 42% of assists are tallied by these three.

The Kooks – Shine On

The Islanders’ desperate plea to their 3 stars

We’ve noted before (often, always) that the Kings can’t seem to win against garbage teams. In their last meeting, the Islanders scored two goals in quick succession in the second, leaving the Kings trailing and me weeping. They eventually came back to win it, thanks to the good ol’ Manchester Monarchs.

The Kings have had a pretty strong last string of games, as compared to the Islanders’ dismal record, and they have almost twice as many points as the Islanders.

They Might Be Giants – Take Out the Trash

Maybe this time, the Kings will refrain from playing the comeback game, and not fall to yet another terrible team. Maybe they’ll play like the dominant team they can be instead of like wet garbage. One can only hope.
